Hi

I had a very enjoyable afternoon taking tea with Grace. She is really wonderful. I think she would best be described as a force of nature! It is quite strange, though, meeting someone for the first time who you think you already know so well and are so fond of. She has certainly made me feel extremely welcome.

Dann popped over for a cuppa too, which was nice. Grace speaks to him affectionately, and he to her. They seem to have a special bond and are obviously very close. He certainly smiles more in her direction than at anyone else I have seen so far.

I have to say, the Lodge is amazing and much grander than I imagined. It is a large white colonial-style building with a deep portico to the front held up by fluted white columns. Grace has the west wing as her private quarters, for herself and her housekeeper Sarah. She certainly has impeccable taste; it is beautifully furnished.

The rest of the Lodge is given over to guest accommodation and some public spaces, like the library. Grace laughed when she said that, while all her visitors like the thought of being in the African bush, some of them are actually a bit nervous of the bugs and spiders so prefer their rooms with floors and walls that meet, rather than rooms like my little cottage, which has gaps all over the place for creepy-crawlies to get in (none seen yet though!).

There is also a magnificently manicured lawn that stretches down from the building to the riverbank jetty, dotted with colourful tended flowerbeds, so different from the native bush that surrounds the rest of the property. Grace says her garden is her one indulgence now and it certainly is beautiful.
